What are WhatsApp Channels, and How Do I Join or Create One?

Feb 3, 2024

WhatsApp Channels offer new ways for users and businesses to connect and share updates.

WhatsApp is constantly being updated by Meta to include new features and increase the platform's value for its users. In an attempt to further this, the company just unveiled Channels. The use of channels on WhatsApp has given users and organizations a new option to update their followers. On WhatsApp, anyone may create a channel and follow other channels that interest them. Everything you need to know about WhatsApp Channels, including how to join and create one, is right here.

What Exactly Is a WhatsApp Channel?

A WhatsApp channel allows users to follow individuals or groups and receive activity updates. On WhatsApp, everyone may create a channel and follow those of their favorite individuals or groups. News portals, sports teams, political figures, and even specific organizations might fall under this category.
Because channels only allow one-way communication, administrators can use text or media (pictures, videos, stickers, etc.) to share fresh information with their followers or to announce the most recent updates.

Alternatively, they can conduct surveys to find out what their audience thinks or to understand their preferences.
WhatsApp Channels are private, so when you join one, neither the admin nor any of its followers can see your phone number. Members of a channel can also not access the admin's phone number. Channels can be found on the Updates (formerly Status) page. You can start your Channel or join existing ones from this page. This tab also provides access to the Status feature. According to Meta, Channel updates are kept on its servers for 30 days.

How Can I Get WhatsApp Channels?

Included in the most recent WhatsApp update is a new feature called Channels. Therefore, upgrade WhatsApp on your iPhone or Android device to the current version if you wish to enable the feature.
Navigate to the Updates section of the App Store (iPhone) or Play Store (Android). Check for pending WhatsApp updates right here. Installing one should enable you to use the functionality on your WhatsApp if one is accessible.

How Do I Join a Channel on WhatsApp?

Open WhatsApp after updating it on your phone and go to the Updates page. This is where you can find a list of recommended Channels from WhatsApp that you can follow. These channels include well-known local celebrities, news, sports, media, and other organizations.
In a similar vein, WhatsApp features a searchable Channel directory. This allows you to follow Channels on WhatsApp that belong to individuals or groups you find interesting. Here's how to implement each of these strategies:

  • Verify that WhatsApp's Updates tab is open.
  • The Channels area is located below Status when you scroll down.
  • When you tap the "Find Channels" button, a list of suggested channels will appear on the following screen. Tap the filters at the top of the list to filter the Channels. You can choose to switch the nation to locate channels in a different area.
  • You may view the type of content a channel transmits by tapping on its name. For additional channel information, click on the name of the Channel here. This page also has choices for sharing the Channel with others, such as Forward and Share.
  • Click the Follow icon in the upper-right corner of a channel if, after seeing its content, you think it's interesting and would like to get updates in the future. Alternatively, you can join a channel by selecting it from the suggested list and clicking the plus (+) icon next to its name.
  • You must explicitly check the Channels to view the most recent updates, as joining them will muffle your everyday channel notifications. Click the bell icon in the upper-right area, to the left of the three-dot menu, to unmute notifications. Alternatively, tap the name of the Channel at the top and turn off the muted option.
  • All Status updates show horizontally at the top of the Updates page whenever you follow many Channels. This part is followed by a list of all the Channels you follow in the Channels section.

How Can a WhatsApp Channel Be Created?

Anyone can create a Channel on WhatsApp. Thus, you can set up your own WhatsApp Channel if you have a following and want to make a place to post updates or vital information. The procedures to establish a Channel in WhatsApp are as follows:

  • Select the Updates tab when you launch WhatsApp.
  • Choose Create Channel by tapping the addition (+) symbol next to Channels.
  • Click Next and give your Channel a name. Below it, write down a description to give new followers an idea about what the Channel is about.
  • To help visitors locate your Channel more quickly, click the profile icon and choose a channel icon. To create the Channel, click the Create channel button at the end.
  • You can begin posting messages on your WhatsApp Channel once you've created it. Furthermore, you can distribute the Channel's link to your followers. To share it, click the Channel Link button in the upper-right corner and choose which contacts to share it with. Alternatively, you can send the link by email or via a different chat program.
  • Followers of the Channel cannot message the administrator directly or respond to updates posted on the Channel. They are limited to utilizing emoticons to react to the updates or casting their votes in the Channel polls. Within the Updates tab, WhatsApp displays your Channel and all the channels you have followed under the Channels section.

How to Remove a Channel on WhatsApp?

WhatsApp allows you to deactivate your WhatsApp Channel if you desire to do so for whatever reason. To delete a WhatsApp channel, you only need to provide the cellphone number associated with the Channel. Then, follow these steps to delete the Channel:

  • Go to your Channel and click the Updates tab.
  • Press the name of the Channel at the top.
  • To confirm deletion on the following page, hit the Delete channel button at the bottom and push Delete again.
  • WhatsApp will prompt you to provide your mobile number and country code (connected to the Channel). To remove the Channel, type it in and press Delete.

You won't be able to get your WhatsApp Channel back once you delete it; it will be gone forever. The previous activity and channel updates will still be available to your followers on your Channel.
